To clear ChatGPT memory, open Settings > Personalization > Memory and use the available memory-management controls to delete an individual saved memory or all saved memories. If the personal detail also appears in a conversation, fully removing it requires deleting both the saved memory and the source chat.
This distinction matters because saved memories and conversations are separate. Deleting a chat alone may leave a memory that ChatGPT saved from it, while deleting a saved memory does not erase the original message from your chat history. Turning memory off also does not delete memories that are already stored.
The general process applies to ChatGPT on the web, iOS, Android, macOS and Windows. Exact labels and available controls can vary by plan, platform, region or rollout, so use the equivalent Personalization and Memory options shown on your account.
Review what ChatGPT remembers
Before deleting anything, determine whether the unwanted detail is a saved memory, information being referenced from chat history or information present in both places. OpenAI treats saved memories and referenced chat history as distinct sources, as explained in OpenAI’s saved-memory guidance.
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Select Personalization, then open Memory.
- Open the available memory-management controls and review the saved entries shown on your account.
- If Reference chat history appears as a separate setting, note whether it is enabled. This setting is separate from saved memories.
- Decide whether you need to remove one saved item, clear all saved memories, disable future memory use or remove the detail from both memory and its original conversation.
Do not assume every account has the same review screen, search tools or management options. The important point is to distinguish the source before acting:
- One unwanted saved detail: Delete its individual saved-memory entry.
- All saved details: Use the option to delete all saved memories.
- Future memory use: Disable the relevant saved-memory and chat-history reference settings.
- A detail that must be removed from both places: Delete its saved memory and the source chat.
Memory controls apply to remembered information across ChatGPT. If your goal is instead to organize related chats, files and instructions for a particular body of work, you can use ChatGPT Projects for work-specific context.
Delete one saved memory or clear all saved memories
Use an individual deletion when only one fact is unwanted. Use Delete all when you want to clear the saved-memory collection available through your account. According to OpenAI’s Memory FAQ, deleting saved memories is a separate action from deleting conversations.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Open the available control for managing saved memories.
- To remove one detail, find that saved-memory entry and use its deletion option.
- To clear the complete saved-memory list, choose Delete all and complete any confirmation shown.
Deleting one entry removes that item from the saved-memory collection without requiring you to clear everything else. Choosing Delete all clears the saved memories managed through that control.
Neither action deletes the conversations in which those details were originally shared. If your objective is complete removal of a detail that remains written in a chat, you must also delete that conversation.
If your device does not display the same arrangement or wording, look for the equivalent memory-management option under Personalization. Avoid relying on an interface path copied from another platform when your account presents different controls.
Turn off future memory use
Deleting existing memories and disabling memory serve different purposes. Deletion removes selected saved entries; disabling a memory setting stops the corresponding source from being used in the future. It does not erase saved memories that already exist.
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Turn off Reference saved memories if you do not want ChatGPT to use saved memories.
- If Reference chat history is shown separately and you do not want ChatGPT to reference past conversations, turn that setting off as well.
- Delete existing saved memories separately if you also want them removed rather than merely disabled.
Because saved memories and referenced chat history are separate sources, do not assume that changing one visible control has cleared the other. Review each setting available on your account and choose it according to whether you want to stop saved-memory use, chat-history reference or both.
Important: Turning off Reference saved memories does not delete memories already stored. Use the memory-management controls to remove those entries.
For a new conversation that you do not want to use or create memories, you can consider Temporary Chat. This is a separate conversation option rather than a way to erase existing memories; OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ provides the relevant official context. Memory settings are also separate from controls governing whether conversations may be used to improve models.
Fully remove a detail from memory and the original chat
A personal detail can exist in two relevant places: as a saved memory and as text in the conversation where you shared it. Removing only one copy does not remove the other.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Find the unwanted saved-memory entry and delete it.
- Locate the conversation in which you shared the detail.
- Use ChatGPT’s available delete action to delete that source chat.
This two-part process prevents the most common incomplete removal:
- If you delete only the chat: A separately stored saved memory may remain.
- If you delete only the saved memory: The original message remains in the conversation.
- If you turn memory off: Previously stored memories are not automatically deleted.
For a detail stored as both a saved memory and content in its source conversation, delete both sources. Do not treat hiding, archiving or disabling a setting as equivalent to completing both deletion actions.
Does deleting a ChatGPT chat clear its saved memory?
No, not necessarily. A saved memory created from that conversation can remain separately after the chat is deleted. To fully remove a detail stored in both places, delete the saved memory and the source chat.
Does turning off ChatGPT memory delete existing memories?
No. Turning off Reference saved memories stops future use of saved memories but does not erase memories already stored. Delete those entries separately through the memory-management controls.
Can I delete one ChatGPT memory without clearing them all?
Yes. Open Settings > Personalization > Memory, access the available memory-management controls and delete the individual entry. Use Delete all only when you want to clear all saved memories.
