WhatsApp Web supports one-to-one and group voice and video calls directly in a computer browser, without requiring the Windows or Mac desktop app. However, WhatsApp introduced the feature through a gradual rollout, so the call controls may not yet appear for every account or computer.

Is voice and video calling available on WhatsApp Web?

Yes. In its July 28, 2026 WhatsApp Web calling announcement, WhatsApp confirmed that users can make and receive one-to-one and group audio and video calls from WhatsApp Web. The announcement also confirmed a Calls tab, call history, favorites and reactions.

This makes older instructions saying that browser calls always require WhatsApp Desktop outdated. WhatsApp nevertheless described Web calling as a gradual rollout, so availability can differ between accounts.

WhatsApp has not published an official list of supported browser and operating-system combinations. Do not assume that calling is guaranteed on every Windows, Mac, Linux or ChromeOS setup simply because WhatsApp Web itself opens there.

How to make a voice or video call on WhatsApp Web

  1. Open WhatsApp Web in a desktop browser and enter your linked WhatsApp session.
  2. For a one-to-one call, open the conversation with the person you want to call.
  3. If Web calling is available for your account, use the visible voice-call control for an audio call or the video-call control for a video call.
  4. For a group call, open the intended group and look for the corresponding calling controls. You can also inspect the Calls tab for the calling options available in your current interface.
  5. Allow any microphone or camera request presented by the browser, then wait for the other participant or participants to answer.

WhatsApp confirms that individual and group calls are supported, but its launch information does not document the precise location or wording of every call control. Those interface details may vary as the feature rolls out, so use the calling controls shown in your current chat or Calls tab rather than relying on an older desktop-app tutorial.

How to answer an incoming WhatsApp Web call

  1. Keep your linked WhatsApp Web session open when you expect the call.
  2. When the incoming-call panel appears, check whether it identifies the call as voice or video.
  3. Use the on-screen option to answer or decline the call.
  4. If you answer a video call, grant camera and microphone access if the browser asks for it.

WhatsApp confirms that Web can receive calls, but its published announcement does not specify whether browser notifications are required or merely help alert you when the tab is not in view. Incoming-call presentation can also differ by browser, so follow the controls displayed in the open WhatsApp Web session.

Allow the microphone and camera and use the call controls

A voice call needs microphone access. A video call normally needs both microphone and camera access. If the browser displays a permission request, choose the option that allows WhatsApp Web to use the requested device.

If access was previously denied, restore it through the browser’s site-permission controls for WhatsApp Web. The location and wording of those controls differ between browsers, so avoid following a settings path written for a different browser.

During an active call, use the controls presented in the call panel to mute or unmute your microphone, enable or disable video, or end the call. The available controls can vary, although WhatsApp officially confirms reactions as a Web calling feature.

Screen sharing is also supported during compatible calls. If that is your next task, follow the separate guide explaining how to share your screen during a WhatsApp video call.

What to check if the WhatsApp Web call buttons are missing

  • Confirm that you are in WhatsApp Web: Use the official browser service rather than instructions intended for the Windows or Mac app.
  • Inspect both relevant areas: Open an individual or group conversation and check the Calls tab for any calling controls available to your account.
  • Allow for gradual availability: WhatsApp described Web calling as a gradual rollout. Missing controls can therefore be an availability issue rather than proof that browser calling is impossible.
  • Do not rely on outdated desktop-only advice: Installing WhatsApp Desktop is no longer an official requirement for accounts that have Web calling.
  • Avoid assuming that the operating system is the cause: WhatsApp has not supplied an official browser and operating-system compatibility list for Web calling.

If no call controls appear after these checks, there is no confirmed setting that can force the feature onto an account that has not received it. This is separate from audio, camera or connection problems that occur after a call has already started.
