To cancel a personal ChatGPT subscription, use the service that originally billed you: ChatGPT on the web, Apple or Google Play. The device you currently use does not determine where you must cancel.
OpenAI advises canceling at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid another renewal. Cancellation stops future renewal, while paid access continues through the remainder of your current paid period. This guide covers individual subscriptions, not Enterprise or Edu workspace plans.
Find out who bills you for ChatGPT
Before canceling, check where the active subscription is managed:
- ChatGPT: Sign in to the relevant account at ChatGPT on the web, open Settings and look for the available Billing, Account or plan-management control.
- Apple: On an iPhone, open Settings, select your Apple Account name and open Subscriptions. Check whether ChatGPT appears there.
- Google Play: Open Google Play and check its Subscriptions area for ChatGPT.
If ChatGPT is not listed, check any other Apple or Google account that may have been used for the original purchase. Using ChatGPT on an iPhone, Android phone, Mac or Windows PC does not by itself identify the billing provider.
Cancel a subscription purchased through ChatGPT on the web
Use this route only when the subscription was purchased directly through ChatGPT rather than through an app store. OpenAI’s documentation currently uses varying labels for the web billing controls, so follow the equivalent option shown in your account.
- Sign in to the subscribed account at ChatGPT on the web.
- Open Settings.
- Open the available Billing, Account or plan-management control.
- Select the option to manage the subscription, then choose Cancel plan.
- Complete the confirmation prompts shown.
These steps follow OpenAI’s ChatGPT cancellation guidance. If you use the macOS or Windows app but subscribed directly through ChatGPT, complete the documented route at ChatGPT in a browser; do not assume the desktop app has the same billing controls.
Cancel an Apple-billed ChatGPT subscription
An App Store purchase must be canceled through Apple using the Apple Account that originally subscribed.
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Select your Apple Account name.
- Select Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Use the cancellation control shown and confirm your choice.
If ChatGPT is missing, confirm that the iPhone is using the correct Apple Account. Deleting or uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel Apple billing. See OpenAI’s Apple subscription instructions for the official route.
Cancel a Google Play-billed ChatGPT subscription
You can cancel a Google Play subscription from the Play Store or through Google Play on the web. In either case, use the Google account that purchased the subscription.
In Google Play on Android
- Open Google Play.
- Open the Subscriptions area.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Choose the cancellation option and complete the prompts.
On the Google Play website
- Sign in to the Google Play website with the Google account used for the purchase.
- Open its subscription-management controls.
- Find ChatGPT and select the management option.
- Choose the cancellation option and complete the prompts.
Uninstalling ChatGPT from an Android device does not cancel the subscription. OpenAI’s Google Play cancellation instructions confirm both the Play Store and website routes.
When ChatGPT cancellation takes effect
OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. After cancellation, your paid access remains available through the rest of the current paid period rather than ending immediately. Keep a copy or screenshot of the cancellation confirmation for your records.
Cancellation stops future subscription renewal. It does not mean the same thing as uninstalling the app, requesting a refund or deleting the account. Exporting information is also unnecessary for cancellation, although you can separately export your ChatGPT data if you want a record for another purpose.
Does deleting the ChatGPT app cancel the subscription?
No. Uninstalling the app does not cancel an Apple- or Google Play-managed subscription. You must cancel through the original billing provider.
Can I keep using ChatGPT after canceling?
Yes. Paid access continues through the remainder of the current paid period. Cancellation prevents the subscription from renewing after that period.
