This process is intended for downloading a broad copy of your chat history and account data. If you only need to locate one retained conversation, it is faster to search your ChatGPT history.
Check whether your account can export ChatGPT data
Before requesting an export, confirm that you still have access to the email address or phone number associated with the ChatGPT account. OpenAI requires access to that destination to verify account ownership and deliver the export.
- Free, Plus and Pro: OpenAI documents the self-service export process for these personal account plans.
- Business and Enterprise: The personal self-service export path is not available for these managed workspaces.
- ChatGPT Edu: An export may be available when a workspace administrator has enabled permission and the workspace is not subject to a data residency configuration. See the official ChatGPT Edu export requirements.
If you cannot access the account’s associated email address or phone number, you may be unable to complete the normal signed-in export process.
Request your ChatGPT data export
The confirmed web workflow in OpenAI’s ChatGPT data export guidance is:
- Sign in to the relevant account at ChatGPT.
- Open your profile and select Settings.
- Select Data Controls.
- Choose Export Data.
- Select Export and confirm the request.

Menu placement can change between app releases, but the request must be made for the same account whose history and account data you want to download.
Receive and download the export safely
OpenAI sends the export message to the email address associated with the account or by SMS for a phone-only account. Delivery may take up to seven days.
- Open the export message from OpenAI.
- Use its download link within 24 hours.
- Download the ZIP archive to a device or storage location you control.
- Keep the archive secure because it may contain private conversations and account information.
The archive contains your chat history and related account data, but it is not a restorable backup. It will not automatically recreate the original sidebar, settings, files or subscription in another account.
Exporting also does not delete your chats or saved Memory. If deletion is your goal, use the separate guide to remove information saved in ChatGPT Memory.
Fix a missing, pending or expired ChatGPT export
- The export has not arrived: Wait up to seven days from the request. Check the associated email inbox and ordinary filtered locations such as spam or junk. For a phone-only account, check the associated SMS destination.
- An export is already processing: Wait for the existing request to finish. Do not repeatedly submit new requests while one is pending.
- The download link expired: The link expires after 24 hours. Return to Data Controls and request a new export.
- You cannot sign in: Use the official Privacy Portal fallback identified in OpenAI’s data export guidance. The current portal route and verification prompts should be checked in the official guidance because they were not independently verified for this article.
- You cannot access the associated email or phone: The normal export flow depends on account verification and delivery through that destination. Do not use unofficial export utilities or browser extensions as a substitute.
